HISTORY

In 1974 the brick and wood building was completed and opened it's doors for the first time as the Foxfire Restaurant. By the 1980s the restaurant became known as the Black Bear. It was in the later half of that decade that we first ate there. It was not unusual to find your neighbors sitting a couple of tables away.


From the 1990s until 2010 when we bought it the management changed hands about every four or five years. Most of them were under an owner carry or lease agreement with the actual property owner, and as such let the building fall into disrepair, and let the reputation of a nice restaurant get tarnished.


It was after the building had sat vacant for over a year and a half that we decided to buy it and restore the building, and the reputation, to what it had been many years ago. We replaced the old worn out entrance with wide stairs and a handicapped accessible ramp and concrete parking area. We also  re-did the 400 sq. ft. deck off the bar. Redwood was used on both the entrance and the deck.


Inside the floors were bare sheets of OSB throughout the whole building. We put in carpets, a dance and bar area floor of wood grain pergo, and vinyl in the cook station and back of the kitchen. The bathrooms have tile floors and were remodeled to be wheelchair accessible.


The inside walls were all painted black when we started, and the outside was painted barn red. Right away the walls were all repainted inside, painting the outside and three large murals of bears on the walls came over the following years.


All of the restaurant equipment there when we started was either sold or taken to the dump. All of the appliances were brand new when we opened our doors in 2010, and they are still in excellent shape today in one of the cleanest kitchens around!


The Bear is perfect for very large gatherings of people. In the past nine years we have had a single party of over 120 people, and a charity event when about 500 people came through in a single day. The restaurant is currently set up for about 100 people in our dining room, lounge and bar, and deck.


The biggest attraction is the wildlife. We feed the birds just outside two of our dining room windows. But it's not just the birds that show up for the seed. Every type of bird knows that we put out food and exactly when we do it. Ground squirrels, chipmunks, javelina, deer, elk, hawks, and an occasional  fox, bobcat, or even a bear come by the feeders to see what we're serving.

Plenty of room to move around and a lot of space for gatherings of large parties. Center walls are not load bearing giving you the option of an open floor plan.
